Among Lisbon's illustrious and most sought-after neighborhoods, one of the most comprehensive is Santa Maria Maior. This central district comprises a handful of attractive areas, such as Alfama, Baixa, Sé, Castelo and Rossio, overlapping, changing only slightly in landscape and city views. Santa Maria Maior is located about 10 km from Lisbon's Portela Airport and 6 km from the Port of Lisbon on the Tagus River. Parts of the district rest under the shadows of the imposing hill where the Castle of São Jorge resides, a hill that descends to the cathedral of the same name in the Santa Maria Maior district, also known as Sé Cathedral. São Vicente, also known as São Vicente de Fora, is an area beloved by locals and visitors alike. It borders the beautiful and charming Alfama and is almost as old. There are many important historical attractions in São Vicente and the district is known for its miradouros (viewpoints) where you can see Lisbon.
